Obituary

Robert F. Ladenson, the founder of the Ethics Bowl, philosopher and legal scholar, passed away on May 3, 2026 in Los Angeles. He dedicated his career to exploring the intersection of law, ethics, and education, and leaves behind a legacy that transformed competitive debate into a global movement for civil discourse.

Born on August 3, 1943 in Chicago, Ladenson's academic journey was defined by a dual expertise in philosophy and law. He earned his Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin (1965), his PhD in Philosophy from Johns Hopkins University (1970), and his Juris Doctor from DePaul College of Law (1980). This combination allowed him to bridge the gap between abstract moral theory and the practical complexities of the American legal system.

For over 50 years, Ladenson was a cornerstone of the Illinois Institute of Technology faculty, where he served as Professor of Philosophy and co-founder of the Center for Study of Ethics in the Professions. Upon his retirement, he was named Professor of Philosophy Emeritus, recognizing his distinguished service to the institution.

His 1993 creation of the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl at IIT fundamentally changed how students engage with ethics. His goal was to create a competition that prioritized collaborative dialogue and deliberative thoughtfulness over the confrontational style of traditional debate. He believed this format could help students understand and empathize with opposing viewpoints, and the Ethics Bowl format he created rewards collaboration and the nuanced analysis of “grey areas”—skills he considered essential for a stable democracy. Tens of thousands of students have taken part in annual Ethics Bowl competitions nationally, internationally, and across a range of sectors including the armed services, with participant ages ranging from high school through senior citizens.

As a long-standing member of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics, Ladenson was honored in their publications and anniversaries for his profound contribution to the academic community, which established the Robert Ladenson Spirit of the Ethics Bowl Award in his honor to celebrate the teams that best exemplify his core values of respect and civility, thoughtfulness, and collaboration.

Ladenson was also a respected author, known for his ability to apply ethics to real-world professions. His publications include:

Beyond the classroom, Ladenson served for two decades as a Special Education Hearing Officer (1987–2007), where he applied his moral philosophy to resolve disputes with empathy and precision. He served as a due process hearing officer for the Illinois State Board of Education, resolving disputes between parents and school districts. His tenure in this role is widely cited in academic circles as a model of applying philosophical ethics to practical legal disputes.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Joanne, who was his longtime partner in steering the Ethics Bowl Initiative; by his brother Mark; by his daughters Sarah and Jocelyn; and his grandchildren Penelope, Sonny, Gwendolyn, and Caoimhe. His life's work continues to flourish in every classroom where students pause to consider an opponent's perspective with the same rigor as their own.
